I wish I could have made the funeral as well.

Even more, it made me sad I decided to "wait until next year" to visit everyone.

Next year turned out to be too late.

Hope you are well.

Dave,
Man, your game changed my world. The elegance of it without the over the top crunch changed the way I look at RPGs forever.
I was still playing this as late as 2002 (off and on of course). I can't tell you how much I appreciate your contribution to role playing.
I know what you mean about the blip feeling. Sometimes I have felt like I am the only one who has heard of this game.
I just found this blog, so I will be watching it for other cool stuff you are doing!

Hi Zeb,

I am glad I found your rules on the net.
I still have the box and reading the rules gave me a urge to look for it and play again.
If I remember correctly, I bought the game after reading a review in White Dwarf (which was still a wonderful RPG mag then). They said something like "... D&D as it should have been written from the start...".
I completely agreed with them!

Very cool. I thought I was the only one who got this too!

The Conan RPG was the first RPG I've ever owned back when I started GMing in 5th grade, around 1988. I remember having difficulty choosing whether to get the Star Frontiers Alpha Dawn box, the Marvel Superheroes Basic set, or Conan.

During that summer vacation from long ago, five larger-than-life companions entered the hobby of adventure gaming, carving a bloody path through Hyboria, before moving on to other worlds beyond.

Hey Zeb,

I have pen & inked a mascot worthy of your site's name. It's too big to scan, so you get the whole thing for yourself.

Please send me your mail-to address and I'll send it to you.

Funny thing is, it really creeps out Drew (Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!)

All the best,

I recently heard about this project and added it to my bookmarks. I'm afraid I never got hold of the original game, but the more I hear about it the more I wish I had.

On the other hand I pick up Amazing Engine when it came out and always wished it lasted longer. I never did run anything using the AE rules, but I liked them. I'd love to see an official second edition, but that seems unlikely considering WotC's policy on old non-D&D TSR properties (roughly along the lines of, "TSR did more than D&D? Sorry citizen you must have an old-truth history book. Please turn it in for a new good-truth history book and stop speaking treason."). Glad to see you're doing well even if I only 'knew' you by way of looking at the cover of a few books and articles and saying, "Hey, I recognize that name."

Hi Zeb. Well, ever since I GMed the game way back in the late eighties I've been a huge fan of your game. I still have my battered original boxed set and wouldn't let go of it for anything! And now, 20-odd years later I find myself returning to it, riding the wave of renewed interest in lighter and more flexible rules-systems.

The system captures the Conan world very elegantly while providing a very solid and flexible set of mechanics. I've been following the ZeFRS project for a while now, and while it's great to see it out there again, I can't really ever divorce it from the setting in my mind.

You could resolve pretty much any action with that resolution chart and the 'world book' containing the background was second to none in my opinion! With Conan having such a dear place in my gaming heart I recently bought the d20 Conan game from Mongoose Publishing. What a let down - the background in your game, not to mention the mechanics that capture the fast action SO much better, just can't be matched!

And now, I must draw my no doubt rather embarrassing praise to and end. Thankyou Zeb.

Hmm, I might have a copy of it at home. It was the first game I worked on for TSR, starting the first few days I got there, laboring under the tutelage of Anne Gray McCaffery (remember her, Zeb?). I assume I got a copy, so I'll check.

My first week was pretty weird. There was working on Conan with Anne and then my encounter with Brian Blume in the corridors. I was going somewhere upstairs and this strange, vaguely homeless-looking guy walked up to me and started talking to me. We parted after about 10 minutes and I went to tell Steve Winter (then my boss) about this guy who obviously didn't belong here aimlessly wandering the corridors. Steve had me describe him and then informed me it was Brian, one of the co-owners. An interesting start to my TSR career. :)
